Applying for places at the new Co-education Secondary Schools in Barry


Barry Comprehensive School and Bryn Hafren Comprehensive School will be closing in July 2018 and will be replaced by two brand new mixed-sex secondary schools from September 2018. All parents of pupils in years 7-9 (2017/18 academic year) will be required to apply for a place at their preferred school.

Barry Comprehensive School and Bryn Hafren Comprehensive School currently share a single catchment area. The new mixed-sex schools have separate catchment areas, with the Port Road Site largely serving the west of Barry and the Merthyr Dyfan Road Site serving the east. Parents can check their catchment area by typing their home postcode below.




Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

  • Do I have to apply for a school place?
    All parents/guardians of pupils in years 7 – 9 during the 2017/18 academic year will be required to apply for a school place in one of the two new mixed sex schools that will open from September 2018. As both of these schools are mixed sex, they have separate catchment areas. Please check your catchment area using the catchment area checker on the Vale of Glamorgan website. If you fail to apply for a school place, your child may not be able to attend their preferred school next year.  
  • My child is currently in year 10, will I need to apply for a place for next year? 
    To avoid unnecessary disruption during important GCSE years, it was agreed that pupils in year 10 during the 2017-18 academic year will automatically be placed in the new school on the site of their current school. For example, if your child is currently in year 10 in Bryn Hafren, they will automatically be given a year 11 place in the Merthyr Dyfan Road Site.  
  • Who can complete an application? 
    The parent /guardian of the child concerned must complete the application form. In cases where the child is in/has previously been in Local Authority Care, please include contact details for the social worker.  
  • When do I need to submit my application?
    The online admission portal will be open from 15th September 2017 and will close on the 20th October 2017. If you are unable to access the online portal, or require assistance completing the application form, please contact C1V.  
  • How do I find out the catchment area school for my address? 
    You can find out your catchment area by typing your postcode into the catchment area checker. Your catchment area school will appear under ‘Your Secondary Catchment Area.’ 
  • Can I apply for my child to attend the school that is not in my catchment area?  
    You can apply for your child to attend either school, regardless of the catchment area. However, in the event of the year group being oversubscribed, applications from within the catchment area will be given priority.  
  • Will my free transport be affected by the choice of school I select? 

    As the new schools will have separate catchment areas, free transport eligibility will be affected. Those who will be affected will be written to separately to outline the full impacts.  
  • Will the school uniform change? 
    The two new mixed sex schools will engage with pupils, parents and members of the community to establish a new name, logo and uniform. Transitional arrangements will be put in place to limit financial impacts of introducing a new uniform. 
  • Will my child's GCSE options be affected? 
    All current year 9 pupils will be given a free options choice to ensure all aspects of the curriculum are available to all year 10 pupils, regardless of which new school they attend.
