Vale Catering Services provide a healthy nutritious school meal at lunchtime, which is compliant with the food and nutrient standards set by the Welsh Government's Appetite for Life strategy.
Research has shown that children who consume a healthy balanced lunchtime meal show improved concentration and memory. We have modified recipes to reduce the sugar, salt and fat content and increase protein, carbohydrates, fibre, zinc, iron, folate, calcium and Vitamins A and C.
All kitchen staff are trained in accordance with the legislative requirements associated with catering procedures, to certify that food is prepared in a protected environment. We work in partnership with NHS paediatric dieticians and source food from reputable suppliers and wherever possible it is sourced locally.
Primary School Menus
During April this year, the catering service created 3 nutritionally compliant menus to offer to schools for pupils to choose their favourite.
Schools are now in the process of speaking to pupils and potentially changing to a different menu. Your school will advise and display the menu of choice and the dates the menu relates to. Schools will have another chance to change their menu in the New Year.
All our meals comply with the Welsh Government’s Food and Nutritional Standards. We can also provide special dietary menus upon confirmation and written request from a doctor or a dietician.
Pay for School Meals Online
Pupils attending schools in the Vale can sign up to the scheme and are no longer required to take cash or cheques to school in order to pay for their lunches. Using a secure internet portal, parents can make payments online.
Taster sessions are being introduced where children can try new dishes and give feedback. We also provide presentations to governors, teachers and parents to discuss any queries regarding school meals.
