Carer's Allowance

Carer's Allowance (CA) is an income replacement benefit paid to people who have foregone the opportunity to engage in full-time work because they provide support for a severely disabled person. 

 

The earnings limit is the amount that a carer can earn before their Carer’s Allowance has to stop. This amount will now be £110 a week.

Universal Credit (UC)

Universal credit is a new means-tested benefit that will eventually replace the following current means-tested benefits:

  • child tax credit
  • housing benefit
  • income-related employment and support allowance
  • income-based jobseeker's allowance
  • income support
  • working tax credit

Alzheimer's Society - Council Tax Reduction Factsheet

Some people with dementia are eligible for a discount on their council tax bill. Sometimes people who care for them are also eligible for a discount.

 

Citizen Advice Bureau (CAB)

The Vale of Glamorgan's CAB is expanding its service with the help from the Welsh Government’s Better Advice, Better Lives project. Based at the Barry Office, the CAB’s dedicated ‘Better Advice Better Lives’ team is striving to reach out to local communities in the Vale and is developing various specialist outreach locations at Llandough Hospital, Penarth, Llantwit Major, and Cowbridge. The Benefit Take up Team, also run by the CAB, holds various drop in session.

Hynt Card

Hynt is a new national access scheme that works with theatres and arts centres in Wales to make sure there is a consistent offer available for visitors with an impairment or specific access requirement, and their Carers or Personal Assistants. If you need support or assistance to attend a performance at a theatre or arts centre then you may be eligible to join Hynt.

Nest

Households who find it hard to heat their homes are being encouraged to apply to Nest, a Welsh Government scheme, which aims to make the least energy efficient homes warmer and cosier. A NEA Cymru fuel poverty action guide is also a useful source of information. Nest is open to all householders in Wales, and provides advice on saving energy, money management, fuel tariffs, benefit entitlement and home improvements to help reduce the cost of energy bills.

Watersure Wales

The scheme is available to all household customers who have a water meter fitted.  It helps low-income households who have either a large family, or a family member with a medical condition that requires the use of a significant amount of extra water.
