Road Safety Projects

The Vale of Glamorgan Council works to improve Road Safety at problem areas by designing crossing points, providing Safe Routes to schools and for communities.

Road safety aims to create a safer road environment for all road users. Investigations are carried out at sites throughout the Vale with a poor collision record to identify contributory factors that may be due to the highway environment. The analysis of collision data may result in road safety engineering schemes to be promoted, designed and installed to reduce the accidents in the future.

We offer a wide range of road safety auditing services to developers making alterations to the structure of the highway. The safety audit process ensures that any changes made to the highway are safe and will not increase risk to any road users.

Safe Routes in Communities

Safe Routes in Communities Schemes can include the provision of pedestrian central refuges, road narrowings, the enhancement of pavements and footpaths and the development of cycle routes and associated facilities such as cycle parking.

Local communities, schools and any other groups can submit Travel Plans to identify local problems both with road safety and sustainable travel.

A Travel Plan champion from the community puts a plan together and submits it to the road safety unit of the Council who then assess the Plan in accordance with any grant requirements.

The bids are assessed to form part of a Safe Routes in Communities bid to the Welsh Government.

If you are concerned about a stretch of road please contact us and we will investigate it.
