Youth Action Groups

Youth Action Groups are partnership projects between the Vale of Glamorgan Youth Service and town councils across the county. There are youth action groups in Penarth, Llantwit Major and Barry.

Main Office: West House, Stanwell Road, Penarth CF64 2YG

Youth Action Groups are youth councils that work with local decision-makers in their towns to make sure young people’s views and ideas are taken seriously. They also have fun getting involved in projects and activities to help make things better for young people in their town.  Members of youth action groups are aged 11-18 and are known as youth councillors. Youth councillors are primarily elected by young people from schools and youth organisations within the town to represent their views, ideas and interests and to take action on their behalf.

What We Do:

  •   Support youth councillors to find out what action young people in the town want youth action groups to take on their behalf by talking to young people in the youth groups they represent and conducting surveys and consultations throughout the town.
  • Facilitate monthly meetings for members to discuss the news, views, issues and ideas of young people across the town and decide what action to take.
  • Empower young people to take action to improve local facilities such as parks and youth services.
  • Enable members to participate in local events, promoting the positive and important role young people play within the community.
  • Provide opportunities for members to represent the views of young people directly to local councils, the police and other organisations that work with young people, including having two non-voting seats on town councils.
  • Support members when they represent the young people of the town at Civic events e.g. Remembrance services, inauguration of Town Mayors.
  • Help members fundraise for charities that are improving the lives of people within the town.
  •   Provide accredited training for all members that is recognised by colleges, universities and employers.
  • Register members for Millennium Volunteers and Star Awards to enable them to receive recognition for their volunteering hours.
  • Organise teambuilding residential weekends and days.
