The Barry and District Soroptomists
Soroptimist International Barry and District is part of a global volunteer movement with members working together to transform the lives of women and girls. There are around 80,000 club members in 130 countries and territories around the world.
Soroptimists work at local, national and international level to create opportunities to educate, empower and enable women and girls and to strive for equality for all. The Soroptomist Vision is committed to a world where women and girls together achieve their individual and collective potential, realise aspirations and have an equal voice in creating strong, peaceful communities worldwide.
The Barry and District Branch (of which the Mayor is a member), was chartered in 1968 with 18 members. Today, there are 43 members, volunteering for many local charities. One example is The Sam Davies ward at Barry Hospital (As an older person’s ward some patients have no family and therefore may have no one to bring in essential toiletries).
The Soroptomists, have donated shower gel, soap, toothpaste etc on a regular basis to the Ward, and this is just one of the local community services which Janice and her fellow ‘Sorops’ (as they are fondly known), continue to support on a regular basis.
