Agenda Item No.4
The Vale of Glamorgan Council
Democratic Services Committee: 26th July 2016
ICT Update for Members
Purpose of the Report
To inform Members of any new developments or issues within the ICT service and how they relate to the services provided to them.
That Members note the content of the report.
Reason for the Recommendation
To ensure Members are made aware of any developments to their ICT Service to the wider Council.
Minute No 559 of the Democratic Services Committee confirmed that this Committee would widen its terms of reference to include responsibility for overseeing the Council's approach to Member Development, that the former Member ICT Working Group be not reappointed and that a further report be presented to this Committee on future proposals in respect of ICT for Members and Members' ICT Strategy.
It was also agreed that a Members' ICT update would be a standing item for this Committee.
Relevant Issues and Options
Members will be aware that the Civic Offices are undergoing an upgrade in terms of electrical cabling and network cabling which has started on the ground floor and which will cover the public access areas such as committee rooms etc. This will improve the wi-fi coverage to better enable Members to use tablet computers for meetings in the future as referred to in the last meeting. This will also improve access for members of the public.
Minute number 3109 from Cabinet on 14th March 2016 resolved that "the Council should purse the wider use by Elected Members of tablet computers, specifically in terms of Committee papers and for this to be referred to Cabinet for consideration". A report will be presented to Cabinet in September giving the full details of the proposal and an analysis of the costs and savings that would result from the implementation of the proposal.
The free public access wi-fi across Barry Island beach front has now come on line and is working well. The area covered includes the train station, funfair, promenade and beach. Full coverage of the area past the Eastern Shelter has been delayed whilst waiting for listed building consent to install wireless access points on the shelter itself; however, tests have shown that, although coverage exists to that area, it is not as good as the rest of the beach area.
The Head of Strategic ICT has requested a postponement to the next meeting of the presentation of the ICT and Digital Strategies as he would want to deliver them personally.
For clarification the ICT Support to Primary Schools is being provided by a separate team within the Education Department. Corporate ICT has been providing support to Bryn Hafren Comprehensive and has written to Barry Boys' Comprehensive School, Ysgol Bro Morgannwg and Llantwit Major Comprehensive School to explore the possibility of providing a similar service to them.
