81 applications from local sports clubs and organisations were awarded funding totalling £92,220.89 in the past year thanks to the Community Chest scheme.

The Community Chest scheme is a Sports Wales initiative, managed locally by the Vale of Glamorgan Council’s Sports & Play Development Team. The scheme offers start-up grants of up to £1500 for community sport and activities that encourage more people to be more active, more often, and raise the standard of existing activities.

The 81 awards covered 30 sports and physical activity opportunities including rugby, archery, golf, cricket, sailing, rowing, gymnastics and netball. The funding was used for areas such as initial venue hire, purchase of equipment, and coaching costs. 140 sports specific coach education courses were supported by Community Chest funding between April 2013 and March 2014. There were 10 umpiring and refereeing opportunities funded and 12 courses funded that impacted on physical safety in the sports activities.

After watching the archery events on the television during the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, cadets from the 372 (Barry) Squadron Air Corps wanted to try out the sport themselves. Following a successful Community Chest application, archery was introduced to the cadet programme and the Commanding Officer Jason Horton has been overwhelmed by its success. Since then, the Air Corps have received further funding to develop more activity and now up to 40 air cadets are benefiting from regularly participating in the physical activities on offer.

Local sports clubs and organisations are set to continue to benefit from Community Chest funding as the Vale have been awarded funding for another year. Similar to the previous financial year, organisations will be able to apply for an additional funding request for projects that help grow grassroots community sport across Wales.
