Girls Go Football Crazy in Penarth

Published Friday 04 April 2014

Girls Football is on the rise in the Penarth area following a recent Primary School League developed by local club, Vale Ladies & Girls FC.

The event held at Ysgol Pen Y Garth Sports Hall saw Victoria Primary, St Joseph’s RC, Albert Primary and St Andrew's Major schools play regular friendly fixtures with the aim of introducing girls to the sport.

This development is an add-on to the already established Barry Primary Girls League where 15 teams from 13 schools currently play matches every 3-4 weeks.

Club Chairman & Coach Luke Williams commented “The Penarth League is an extra opportunity we have developed for girls to be introduced to football as we aim to impact on all areas of the Vale. The success of our school based opportunities has already seen a large number of new players join our club from all ranges of abilities. In addition, we are now seeing local schools offering their own girls football clubs during lunchtimes and after-school sessions which is a crucial part to growing the game.”

Girls football has become very popular in recent years and Vale Ladies & Girls FC already have over 100 players actively representing the club on a weekly basis from the age of 7 to adults.
