Penarth wins Pier of the Year 2014

Published 08 April 2014

Penarth’s much-loved pier has been voted Pier of the Year 2014 by the members of the National Piers Society, receiving more than twice the number of votes of its nearest rival, Cromer.

The pier, which is owned and maintained by The Vale of Glamorgan Council, has always been a destination for tourists across Wales and the recent four million pound regeneration of the Pier Pavilion by Penarth Arts and Crafts Ltd has restored the art deco building to its former glory. The multi –million pound project was funded by the Vale Council, Heritage Lottery Fund, Big Lottery Fund, Welsh Government, and various other organisations and donors.

The restoration involved a complete regeneration of the pavilion, with facilities such as a cinema, exhibition spaces, and a restaurant looking out to the Severn Estuary being added.

Neil Moore, Leader of the Vale of Glamorgan Council said: “I am absolutely delighted that Penarth Pier has been chosen as 'Pier of the year 2014'.  The Pier has always been a special place, but the hard work, dedication and commitment of Penarth Arts and Crafts Ltd [PACL] in renovating the Pavilion has ensured the pier is now truly the 'Jewel in the Crown' of the Vale of Glamorgan.  Working together with the Vale Council, PACL secured a grant from the Heritage Lottery for the exciting restoration and I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone that has made it possible.  It is an excellent example of collaboration for the benefit of the community.”
