A Great Season for Girls Football
Published 08 July 2014
The 3rd annual girls’ football festival for primary school pupils in the Vale took place last month at Bryn Hafren Comprehensive.
The festival attracted record numbers of schools to the showpiece that saw over 190 girls between the ages of 7 – 11 take part.
No medals or prizes were given out as the emphasis is placed on the enjoyment and development of the players.
The festival was run by Vale Ladies & Girls FC in partnership with the Vale Council’s Sports & Play Development team. Volunteer coaches and players from the club were instrumental in the organisation and running of the event.
The festival was the last schools event in the girls’ football calendar after a busy season of tournaments and leagues in both primary and secondary schools.
Ben Williams, Active Young People Co-ordinator for the Vale of Glamorgan Council, said: “It’s fantastic to see so many girls enjoying playing football in the Vale of Glamorgan. We’ve seen a steady increase in the number of girls who are accessing football in their schools and communities over the past few years. A huge amount of credit is due to Vale Ladies & Girls for their commitment to growing the game in the area, along with the other clubs in the Vale who provide girls only and mixed opportunities in the sport.”
