Proposals to amalgamate Eagleswell and Llanilltud Fawr primary schools to create a new 420 place primary school for Llantwit Major were agreed at a Vale of Glamorgan Council Community Cabinet meeting in the town on Monday 30 June.
The two primary schools will formally amalgamate in September 2015 and remain split over two sites for that year. To ensure a smooth transition for pupils and parents a new Head Teacher for the amalgamated school will be appointed in January 2015 to oversee the merger.
Under the proposals agreed this week, work on the new building would start on site in September 2015 and the new primary school would open its doors to pupils in September 2016, a year earlier than previously anticipated.
In addition to the building of a new primary school the £22.5million Llantwit Learning Community programme will also provide a new building for Llantwit Major Comprehensive School and significant refurbishments to the school’s existing main block by September 2017 as well as a new building for Ysgol Gymreag Dewi Sant by September 2015.
Cllr Chris Elmore, Cabinet Member for Children’s Services, said: “The new primary school will greatly enhance the educational prospects of its pupils and so the Council is working to get pupils into the new school as soon as possible.”
Following the Community Cabinet meeting, Head Teacher of Llantwit Major Comprehensive Vincent Browne said: “The Llantwit Learning Community will provide first class learning facilities for Llantwit Major. I was delighted to learn that the new building will be available to pupils earlier than had been anticipated and look forward to being able to welcome them to the new site.”
