Ty Iolo Hosts Garden Party

Published 18 July 2014

Staff and volunteers at the Ty Iolo hostel in Barry hosted a garden party for its residents to help spruce up the garden area.

There were also arts and crafts activities for the resident children, as well as a barbecue.

Members of The Shine Project – which provides advice for young parents who are homeless or in danger of being homeless – donated plants and flower pots, and worked with the children to decorate the pots and plant the flowers in them. They also held a craft session for the children to paint pebbles that are now proudly displayed in the garden.

Ty Iolo Garden PartyThe Worker’s Education Association attended and held an iPad workshop for the residents, as well as a cupcake decorating session that proved very popular with the children.

12 plants were kindly donated to the hostel by Wenvoe Garden Centre, and hardware giants B&Q donated a £10 gift card. The VFM Meat Superstore also gave a discount on the food purchased for the BBQ.

Many other volunteers turned up to help on the day, including Angela from the Citizens Advice Bureau, who helped dig up the garden and plant some flowers and plants.

Sue Evans, a local resident and food co-op customer, took charge of the gardening, and has since been back on a few occasions with plants from her own garden to put the finishing touches to the project.

Ty Iolo Staff would like to thank everybody who helped make the day a success.
