Approximately 200 people turned out to support a child safety event on Tuesday 24 June on King’s Square in Barry, held by the Vale of Glamorgan’s Flying Start team.

The ‘community education campaign’ event, spearheaded by the Child Accident Prevention Trust, was held to help raise awareness of serious childhood accidents and offer advice and simple steps that can help prevent them.

Classes from Holton Primary School attended throughout the day enjoying different activities and learning how to keep themselves safe.

Many partner organisations were involved in the day such as the Coastguard, Fire Service, and St. John’s Ambulance, and the local branches of Boots and Tenovus kindly donated sun cream samples to help protect guests in the sun.

The community education campaign aims to show families that the steps to safety are small, but by taking them they can make a huge difference to children’s safety.

Flying Start is a Welsh Government funded initiative and aims to make a decisive difference to the life chances of children under four within the designated areas of Barry.

Flying Start Project Manager Amber Constant said: “This was a great opportunity to spread the basic safety message to parents and the community, preventing accidents in the home, on the road, or even in the sun.”
