Published 15 October 2014

On Saturday 11 October, Art Central, the Vale of Glamorgan Council’s esteemed international Art Gallery, hosted a private view of the touring exhibition ‘Journey: Response to Place’ created by artist organisation, Sculpture Cymru.

The twelve artists involved in the exhibition made work in response to a specific site in the Welsh landscape that has a significant meaning to them. These sculptural pieces were then placed in the environment and photographed.

Sculpture Cymru at Art Central GallerySculpture Cymru was initiated in 2000 and includes some of the most established sculptors in Wales. The artists organise exhibitions, residencies, workshops and seminars, and offers the opportunity for sculptors in Wales to come together and share ideas and expertise.

‘Journey: Response to Place’ displays the artist’s personal and creative journey, including the individual documentation that led them to the final product. This has resulted in a rich and diverse exhibition including not only sculpture but also sketches, paintings, photographs and written word. With all the diversity in media, this exhibition truly has something for everyone.

Guest speaker Emma Geliot, public art consultant and editor of CCQ magazine, who commented on the appropriateness of Art Central as the setting for the impressive size and striking nature of the exhibition, and went on to introduce the artists, and congratulate Sculpture Cymru on producing an outstanding exhibition.

Tracey Harding the Vale’s Arts Development Officer and Manager of the gallery said: “We are delighted to be hosting this spectacular exhibition of work by Sculpture Cymru. It is a really exciting exhibition by these individual artists and definitely an exhibition for all to visit.”

The exhibition is on show in Art Central gallery until the 8 November 2014, and offers an array of exciting artworks that will certainly trigger the imagination with a more than life size figure carved from wood, giant ceramic land sculptures and a mix of wall hung, carved and caste art works.

The Gallery is open to the public, from 10am to 4pm Monday to Saturday, and entry is free.
