Rights ambassadors to bring children’s rights to life

Published 15 October 2014

Young people from across the Vale of Glamorgan are to be given the opportunity to participate in an exciting new project called Rights Ambassadors, which will enable young people aged 11 to 25 to learn about the rights that all children have as specified in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC).

Project participants will then create and deliver a range of workshops to children, young people and professionals throughout the Vale. The UNCRC was ratified by the United Kingdom in 1991 and is taken into consideration by Welsh Ministers when Welsh Government policy is being formed and implemented.

The project, which is being run by the Vale of Glamorgan Council’s Youth Service and funded by the Vale of Glamorgan Children and Young People’s Partnership, will enable young people to earn a Level 2 Agored Cymru Unit and Millennium Volunteers Awards. Participants will also be able to accumulate volunteering hours for their Welsh Baccalaureate and Duke of Edinburgh Award.

Members of staff from the Vale of Glamorgan Youth Service have been touring schools and youth organisations throughout the Vale in recent weeks letting young people know about the new project. The visits have been well received by young people and there is an anticipation that by promoting UNCRC rights through this project it will help make those rights a reality in the lives of more children and young people.

There are three Introductory Evenings scheduled which will provide young people with an opportunity to find out more about the project and information on how to get involved. The evenings are Tuesday 21 October at West House, Penarth from 5.30pm, Wednesday 22 October at YMCA Hub, Barry from 4.30pm, and Thursday 23 October at Llantwit Youth Centre, Llantwit Major from 5.30pm.

Young people aged between 11 and 25 can find out more about the project and Introductory Evenings by phoning 02920 701254 or emailing thepoint@valeofglamorgan.gov.uk.
