New traffic management plans for Barry Island

09 April 2015

The Vale of Glamorgan Council has announced additional traffic management measures for Barry Island to help alleviate congestion ahead of what is expected to be another busy weekend at the resort.

Barry-Island promStarting on Saturday 11 April a new road layout will be in place at the Ship Hill junction which will give priority to traffic leaving Barry Island and assist the flow out of the resort. Under the trial plan the existing roundabout will be replaced by a cross roads. New road markings will be in place to make this clear to visitors.

In addition to the new road layout, traffic management officers will be on duty at Barry Island from 2:00pm to 7:00pm on Saturday and Sunday. Officers will be stationed at points of heavy congestion, including at the Cosy Corner roundabout near to the Harbour Road car park, to help keep traffic moving.  These officers will also control use of the zebra crossing on Harbour Road at peak times to balance priority between those leaving the resort by car and on foot. Council officers will also be stationed at each of Barry Island’s car parks all day to manage both entry and exit.

As traffic levels at Barry Island are again expected to be very high, the Council will be encouraging visitors to use the existing park and ride facility at Barry Docks rail station by erecting temporary signs along all routes into the east of Barry to direct cars to the facility.

Miles Punter, Director of Visible Services, said: “These new measures will initially be in place on a trial basis but if they prove effective and receive positive feedback from Vale residents and visitors they will be implemented on a permanent basis later in the summer.

“We want as many people as possible to visit Barry Island, especially when the sun is out. While we are confident that these measures will help alleviate congestion, Barry Island is likely to be very busy again this weekend and we would encourage visitors to travel by train and local residents to, whenever possible, walk.”
