Ysgol Iolo Morganwg showed they are true champions, winning the final of Côr Cymru Cynradd 2015 at Aberystwyth Arts Centre, which was broadcast live on S4C on Saturday 18 April.

Ysgol Iolo Morgannwg choirLed by conductor Eleri Roberts, and accompanied by Catrin Thomas on piano, the choir competed against three other finalists, Llangennech Juniors Choir, Ysgol Gymraeg Teilo Sant and Côr Ysgol y Wern, eventually being crowned winners.

The children are no strangers to singing success, having won the National Songs of Praise Junior Choir Competition in May 2014, but it was their conductor who flourished this year, also conducting the winners of the children’s choirs category, Côr Heol y March.

Rhian Williams, Head Teacher at Ysgol Iolo Morgannwg, said on the night: “The support has been amazing tonight and the atmosphere electric. I’m incredibly proud of the children. They are young and yet so professional. They have taken the competition in their stride.

“Eleri is an amazing conductor. We are very grateful to have her as part of our school family. It’s fantastic what the school choir has achieved in the last nine months, winning two national competitions.

“But the main point is that the children really enjoy their singing. It’s an important part of our school culture.”

Eleri Roberts said: “To get to the final of this competition was a tremendous result for this very young and small choir. Many of the children are 8 or 9 years old and for many it is their first time on a stage.

“The standard of the competition was very high and all the schools in the final sang incredibly well. The children sang their hearts out and I am very proud of them and thank them for all their hard work and dedication. They truly deserve their win.”

The choir will now be recording a ‘Celebrations’ CD featuring songs from both competitions and from special guests. A concert to launch the album will be held at Acapela in Pentyrch, Cardiff on 18 June.
