Cashless meal payment system now available for all Vale schools

26 August 2015

The Vale of Glamorgan Council’s school meals service has now completed its roll out of cashless catering across the county’s schools.

The cashless catering system allows all schools to offer parents the opportunity to pay for their child’s school meals in advance online. All schools in the Vale have the option to use the system and due to its many benefits the vast majority have chosen to do so*.

The system has proved popular with both schools and parents because in addition to reducing the amount of administration required when schools take payment for meals, the cashless system also removes the need for pupils to carry cash to school. This in turn helps schools manage a number of issues associated with children carrying money such as bullying, theft and stigmatisation, and provides parents with greater peace of mind.

To deliver the cashless system, which was first introduced in September 2013 following a survey of parents, the Council has engaged with one of the leading providers of online payments, ParentPay. By using ParentPay parents can view their account balances, account credits, and any payments outstanding online at any time, as well set alerts to help them manage their finances more easily.

For those families who manage their finances using mainly cash, PayPoint has recently been made available which can be accessed through local town stores or post offices.

The Vale of Glamorgan Council’s catering team provides approximately 7000 meals per day at all 52 schools in the Vale. The service provides a healthy nutritious school meal at lunchtime, which is compliant with the food and nutrient standards set by the Welsh Government's Healthy Eating in Schools Regulations (Wales) 2013.

You can find out more about the meals available at your child's school by visiting the Vale Catering section of our website.
