Construction of next phase of Vale cycle network to commence

17 August 2015

The Vale of Glamorgan Council has announced that the next phase of its ongoing programme to establish a network of cycle paths across the Vale will begin this week.

Following the successful delivery of the first phase of the Port Road cycleway that connects the Weycock Cross junction with Barry Docks Link Road, construction will begin on 17 August on the next off-road cycleway section which will connect the link road with the new housing development in Wenvoe.

Cycleway-markingsCllr Lis Burnett, cabinet member for regeneration, said: “The Vale of Glamorgan Council is committed to delivering sustainable transport infrastructure for the Vale.

“This scheme will reduce congestion on this busy commuter route, enable pupils to travel to school safely by bicycle, make the road safer for all road users, and provide a sustainable option for travelling in and out of Barry.”

The cycleway is being funded by Welsh Government Grant and S106 planning contributions. The construction work is expected to last for 14 weeks with only very minimal disruption to road users.

The Vale of Glamorgan Council’s recently approved Local Transport Plan features a number of new cycle routes within its list of top priorities, and all new developments in the Vale consider the provision of infrastructure for pedestrians and cyclists as part of the planning process.

The Vale of Glamorgan Council will minimise any disruption for road users during the construction of the cycleway by maintaining two-way flows of traffic for the majority of the works period.
