Ysgol Y Deri’s school construction ambassadors were named the winners of the 2015 Speaker’s School Council Awards in the 17-19 category.
And as a reward the students were invited to a celebration event at the Houses of Parliament.
The group were treated to a tour of the Palace of Westminster followed by a celebration ceremony at the new Parliamentary Education Centre site, where they buried a time capsule, in which the students placed their ideas of democracy.
They were then hosted in the Speaker’s apartment for a presentation event hosted by the Speaker of the House of Commons, the Rt. Hon John Bercow MP, where the awards were presented.
Headteacher Chris Britten said: “Ysgol Y Deri is very proud of the achievements of the construction ambassadors. Winning a National Award within weeks of opening a new school has really put us on the map. We couldn’t have achieved this with the dedicated staff at our school and we would like to say a special thank you to Mike Little from Bouygues who has been our guide and inspiration through the whole process.”
The Construction Ambassadors scheme was introduced during the construction of the new Ysgol Y Deri building as part of the Penarth Learning Community.
Following training provided by Leadbitter and the Construction Industry Training Board the Ambassadors visited the site on numerous occasions, reporting back to their fellow pupils via assemblies, year councils and class presentations.
Ambassadors also played an important role in numerous presentations including the topping out ceremony and the Constructing Excellence in Wales exemplar presentation.
