Art Central, The Vale Council’s art gallery in Barry, will be opening its Holocaust Memorial Exhibition on 17 January marking the 70th Anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau and the 20th anniversary of the Srebrenica Genocide in Bosnia.
The exhibition, ‘Keep the Memory Alive’, focuses on the art work and poetry created during the Second World War by the children of Terezin, a walled ghetto on the outskirts of Prague.
Working with over three hundred primary school children in the Vale, artist Nicola Tucker together with the Council’s Arts Development team carried out workshops focusing on the history of the Second World War, and the impact it had on the children of Terezin.
The children, aged 9 to 11, designed and created white butterflies to display at the exhibition, inspired by the book ‘I haven’t seen a Butterfly around Here’ from which the drawings and poems are taken.
Also on display will be art works created by school children in Cardiff and the Vale for the annual Race Equality First calendar and poster competition.
Cllr Gwyn John, Cabinet Member and Armed Forces Champion, said: “The Annual Exhibition is an important part of our calendar to remind us of the atrocities which took place during the Second World War. ‘Keep the Memory Alive’ will remind us all of this, and I encourage everyone throughout the Vale of Glamorgan and beyond to attend and pay their respects.”
January 27, the date of the liberation of the Auschwitz concentration camp, was named Holocaust Memorial Day in 2001 and for the last thirteen years thousands of events have taken place across the UK on or around this day to ensure the stories are never forgotten.
Art Central Gallery is open from 10am to 4pm, Monday to Saturday. The ‘Keep the Memory Alive’ exhibition is open from Saturday 17 January until Saturday 21 February 2015.
