The Vale of Glamorgan Council this week has agreed a formal contract with Bouygues UK to begin work on the innovative and aspirational Llantwit Learning Community.
The project has a number of phases over the next two years including the amalgamation of Eagleswell and Llanilltud Fawr Primary Schools onto one site, creating a new 420 place, 21st Century primary school, new buildings for Llantwit Major Comprehensive School and a 210 place Welsh medium primary school, Ysgol Dewi Sant.
Cllr Chris Elmore, Cabinet Member for Children's Services said: “It is a truly exciting time for education in Llantwit Major. The new learning community provides a unique opportunity to deliver 21st Century facilities across the secondary, primary and Welsh language sectors of education, allowing younger learners to not only benefit from two state-of-the-art primary schools, but to also have use of sector leading facilities at the new Comprehensive school.
“The transformation of Llantwit Major Comprehensive with a brand new building and a significant upgrade to the front block is something for which residents have waited for far too long and I am delighted that the learning community will deliver the excellent facilities the children and young people deserve.”

To ensure a smooth transition for pupils, parents and the wider community the recently appointed Head Teacher for the new school, Ty Golding, has begun work on leading the merger.
Rebecca Lloyd James, Chair of Governors of the new school’s temporary governing body, said: “The creation of a new primary school in Llantwit Major is a wonderful opportunity and will enable us to build the best possible future for our children. The Governing Body is delighted to have appointed Mr Golding as Head Teacher to lead the school.
“It is all about the future now. It is all very exciting and the prospects for the children at our new school look very bright indeed.”

Derek Mutlow, Chair of Governors at Llantwit Major Comprehensive School and an advocate of the development from the very start, said: “The development of Llantwit Learning Community will provide a massive boost for education in our town. It will ensure the very best facilities available to our children and to the wider community.”
