Vale of Glamorgan Council Statement on Voluntary Merger
Published 27 January 2015
The Vale of Glamorgan Council is obviously disappointed with the announcement made today on the rejection of the proposed voluntary merger of the Vale with Bridgend County Borough Council.
Following an invitation by Welsh Government the two authorities submitted an expression of interest in a voluntary merger in November 2014, with a plan to commence a programme of engagement with residents across the two counties had they been given the go ahead to develop a formal merger proposal. However, the Minister for Public Services has now signalled that Welsh Government will not give consideration to a voluntary merger of the Vale and Bridgend Councils.
Cllr Neil Moore, Leader of the Vale of Glamorgan Council, said: “The interests of our residents have been our primary concern and this is why I am deeply saddened by the decision of Welsh Government. In light of today’s announcement we will be considering what options are now left available to the Vale of Glamorgan and how the needs of our residents can be best met.
