Two Welsh rugby internationals took time out of their world cup preparations to attend the Vale School Paragames which was held at Cardiff International Sports Stadium on Thursday 11 June.
Dan Biggar and Ian Gough at Vale School PargamesDan Biggar and Ian Gough were on hand to present medals to the winning pupils who competed, as well as encouraging all the other athletes taking part.
Over 200 pupils from Ysgol Y Deri, St Helens RC Primary School, St Illtyd’s Primary School and St Nicholas Primary School competed, with some catching the eye of the Disability Sport Wales Talent ID Officer who attended to spot any future paralympians.
Staff from Ysgol Y Deri organised the event which had a huge emphasis on every child being able to take part and compete against others of similar ability. Disability Sport Wales Development Officer for the Vale Council, Simon Jones, was on hand to support the event throughout the day.
Simon said: “This is a brilliant event that gives so many pupils the chance to take part in a competitive sporting environment. Every pupil has been catered for where they can take part in meaningful competitive events.
“Although competition is not for everyone, events like this help reach a new audience and improve the chances of more children being hooked on sport. I would like to thank the staff of Ysgol Y Deri for organising such a good event.”
There were a number of athletics based events that every pupil could take part in, including sprints, long jump, and a number of throwing activities. The events were organised to be as inclusive as possible for every pupil so they all had the opportunity to take part in a competitive environment.
St Cyres School in Penarth provided volunteers to help with the running of the events, the third year in a row that pupils have given up a day to help.
Cllr Gwyn John, Cabinet Member for Visible and Leisure Services, also attended the day to support athletes and present several medals to the successful competitors.
