Establishing a Welsh Music Festival in the Vale of Glamorgan

Published 01 June 2015

This year, for the first time ever, a Welsh Music Festival will be held as part of the Barry Island summer events programme.

‘Gŵyl Fach y Fro’ is organised by Menter Bro Morgannwg, with support from the Vale of Glamorgan Council and Wales Arts Council. This will be the first Welsh music festival held in the Vale since the Llandow National Eisteddfod in 2012, and is an exciting addition to the Council’s ‘Barry Island Weekenders’ programme.

The festival will be held on Saturday 11th of July, on Barry Island, in and around the promenade area and will be a free event which is open to everyone. The promenade and surrounding areas have been completely regenerated over the last 2 years.  The eastern shelter has been totally refurbished and new facilities and attractions have been put in place, including colourful new beach huts which will give a striking and unique backdrop to Gŵyl Fach y Fro.

Performing in Gŵyl Fach y Fro 2015 will be Wonderbrass, Carwyn Ellis (from the band Colorama), Kizzy Crawford, Al Lewis, and the night will finish with a big party to the sound of funk band Kookamunga. Hundreds of schoolchildren from the Vale’s Welsh-medium schools will also take to the stage to perform during the day.

Councillor Chris Elmore has welcomed the introduction of this new event: 'We are justifiably proud of our summer events on Barry island, which has a growing reputation as a result of its varied programme throughout the summer holidays.  The partnership with Menter Bro Morgannwg will widen the programme even further and will allow local schools and organisations to be centre stage.  It will also allow us to promote further the use of welsh language within the Vale whilst at the same time promoting Barry Island as a wonderful place to visit.'

Bethan Elfyn said: 'The announcement about Gŵyl Fach y Fro 2015 is a very exciting development for the area. It is great that Welsh music has a new platform like this in the Vale of Glamorgan, and as a resident of the Vale, I am very much looking forward to have an event like this on my doorstep. The line-up includes some of the Welsh music scene’s most prominent artists, and their performances will offer a lovely soundtrack to this unique festival on Barry Island.'
