Part Night Lighting Begins in the Vale

Last autumn saw the Council’s proposal to introduce part night lighting and reduce energy consumption agreed by Cabinet.

Following this agreement a Part Night Lighting Project Board was established to devise and implement a robust risk assessment criterion to identify the areas that will be subject to part night lighting.

This is now well advanced and the Council is ready to begin installation of photoelectric cells to the identified lamps which will enable them to become part night lit.

Our contractors will start the installation work in July beginning in Penarth with a roll out in phases from east to west across the Vale. This is expected to take up to twelve weeks to complete.

The street lights that will be part night lit will be identified by a sign on the street-lighting column stating they will be switched off between midnight and 6.00am, and an interactive part night lighting map on the website will be updated with the progress of the installations as they occur.

Cabinet Member for Leisure and Visible Services, Cllr Gwyn John, said: “We have undertaken rigorous risk assessments to ensure the safety of residents as we introduce part night lighting to the Vale of Glamorgan.

“Part night lighting along with the installation of LED lamps will ensure we achieve significant energy savings over the next few years and will have considerable environmental benefits for the area.”
