Vale of Glamorgan Railway Line Celebrates 10 Year Anniversary

Ten years ago on Friday 10 June 2005 the official reopening of the Vale of Glamorgan Railway Line took place, the first time since the early 1960s that passenger services had run on the railway line.
Vale Railway Line 10th AnniversaryMinister for Economy, Science and Transport Edwina Hart and Jane Hutt AM, together with Cllr Lis Burnett, Cabinet Member for Regeneration at the Vale of Glamorgan Council, visited Llantwit Major Station on Wednesday 10 June to mark the 10 year anniversary.
Since 2005 the hourly train service has gone from strength to strength with the railway line experiencing over a 10% growth in passengers since the line reopened with over 340,000 passenger journeys undertaken on the railway line in 2014.
To mark the anniversary special souvenir pens were given out to passengers and locals by Vale of Glamorgan Council Transport staff on Arriva Trains Vale of Glamorgan Line Services and at Rhoose and Llantwit Major Stations.
Councillor Lis Burnett, Cabinet Member for Regeneration, said: “The station at Llantwit Major offers the opportunity for visitors to come to the historic town and to visit its extensive shops and lovely beach. It has an excellent park and ride for those using the car to access the train service, and is also served by frequent buses and has cycle storage facilities for those passengers who wish to cycle to the station.”
A free prize draw run by Arriva Trains Wales has also been launched offering customers a chance to win one of three return journeys for two people travelling together anywhere on the Arriva Trains Wales network, with the condition that the journey either starts or ends at either Llantwit Major or Rhoose Cardiff Airport.

Jane Hutt AM said: “I was very pleased to join the 10th anniversary celebrations of the Vale of Glamorgan railway line. More and more people now choose to travel by rail to get to and from work and to access leisure activities, and this is reflected in the 10% rise in passengers on the Vale line since 2005.”
