Volunteers on the sports safety courseSports safety sessions a success
Published 27 March 2015
13 young volunteers from sports clubs across the Vale recently attended a workshop teaching them to deliver safe sports sessions.
The Vale of Glamorgan were the first Local Authority in Wales to run this new workshop, which provided an ideal environment for the young volunteers to develop their confidence in how to keep themselves and participants safe in sport.
The young volunteers are involved in the delivery of sports at clubs including Barry Athletic Tennis Club, Barry YMCA Gymnastics Club, Cogan Karate and Glamorgan Artistic Roller Skating Club. There were also volunteers involved in the Council’s Doorstep Sports project as well as representatives from the URDD.
The Sportscoach UK Keeping Children Safe workshop provides young coaches, officials, volunteers, and sports leaders aged 13 to 17 with age-appropriate safeguarding information.
The feedback regarding the course was very positive with many of the participants keen to attend further courses.
The course was organised by the Vale Council’s Sports and Play Development Team as part of their Creating Confident Coaches project, which aims to provide coaches with access to relevant courses, in addition to the sports specific courses they can access via their National Governing Bodies of Sport.
