Barry Schools Transformation Consultation Open

Published 11 May 2015

On Monday 11 May a nine week public consultation on options to transform, expand and modernise secondary education in Barry will begin.

The Vale of Glamorgan Council is considering creating a mixed-sex comprehensive English medium school in Barry by merging Barry and Bryn Hafren comprehensive schools, initially on a split site of the current schools, and subject to Welsh Government funding, subsequently creating a single school campus at the current Barry Comprehensive and Ysgol Bro Morgannwg sites. If the Welsh Government funding is available, it is also proposed to relocate Ysgol Gyfun Bro Morgannwg and Ysgol Gymraeg Nant Talwg to the current Bryn Hafren site to allow the Welsh medium school to expand and meet the increasing demand for places.

Both Barry and Bryn Hafren comprehensive schools have seen a decline in pupil numbers and have significant surplus places. Conversely, rising pupil numbers at Bro Morgannwg and an increase in the number of Welsh medium primary schools mean the Bro Morgannwg will not be able to accommodate all pupils from its feeder primary schools from 2020 on its current site.

A previous public consultation exercise, which concluded in December 2013, saw a large majority of parents, secondary school pupils and primary school pupils respond in favour of mixed secondary schooling in Barry and this consultation is expanding on that previous exercise.

The preferred option being considered by the Council would mean that a new mixed English medium comprehensive school will operate on two sites between September 2017 and September 2020. Subject to funding being available, there would subsequently be a transfer of pupils from Ysgol Gyfun Bro Morgannwg and Ysgol Gymraeg Nant Talwg to the current Bryn Hafren site in September 2020. At the same time in September 2020, and again subject to funding, the pupils at the new English medium school would move on to a single campus on the site of Barry Comprehensive and Ysgol Gyfun Bro Morgannwg.

The consultation will run from Monday 11 May to Monday 6 July 2015. Anyone wishing to share their views on the proposal or give alternative views can do so by completing an online response form on the Council’s website or by completing the response form attached to the consultation document, which is being distributed to parents at all schools involved in the preferred proposals.

Governors, teachers and pupils will be invited to attend focus groups to discuss the proposal. Drop in sessions will be taking place at Barry Memorial Hall in the first week of June.
