Bathing Water at Vale beaches rated Excellent against tough EU standards
4 November 2015
Bathing waters at three beaches in the Vale of Glamorgan have been rated as excellent against tough new standards set by the European Union.
The waters of beaches at Barry’s Cold Knap and Whitmore Bay and at Southerndown received the highest approval rating for the second year running.
Samples of the water at beaches across Wales were taken by Natural Resources Wales between May and September and verified by the European Commission.
Councillor Gwyn John, Cabinet Member for Visible and Leisure Services said, “This is excellent news for the Vale of Glamorgan and its residents. The Vale boasts some of the most scenic beaches in Wales and for the second consecutive year we can now lay claim to having the cleanest bathing waters at Cold Knap, Whitmore Bay and Southerndown.”
He added, “The importance of achieving these water quality ratings cannot be underestimated in terms of the boost that they will inevitably provide to their respective local economies, the wider Vale region and Wales as a whole for that matter. It’s about having the complete package – beautiful scenery and clean water at our beaches for people to enjoy. Tourism contributes significantly to the Vale’s economy and this latest announcement will provide a big fillip to tourism operators across the region.”
