Vale Council finalists in Welsh Housing Awards

12 November 2015

An innovative partnership project between the Vale of Glamorgan Council, City of Cardiff Council, Cardiff & Vale University Health Board, Care and Repair Cymru and Age Connects Cymru has been shortlisted for a national housing award.

The Accommodation Solutions Project which helps smooth the transition from hospital to home has been shortlisted in the Welsh Housing Awards.

The project is designed to help those patients who are ready for discharge from hospital but cannot return to their homes due to housing issues, such as the need for adaptations. The five organisations work together to fast-track low level adaptations to patients’ houses so that they and return home as quickly as possible. Where this isn’t possible the team arrange a stay in one of the nine specially designed apartments to aid their recovery.

Cllr Bronwen Brooks, Cabinet Member for Housing, Building Maintenance and Community Safety, said: “This is a wonderful achievement, the Accommodation Solutions Project has helped many older people leave hospital and move to accommodation that facilitates their return home. It has been great to see such an important project delivered by both statutory and third sector organisations”

Cllr Egan, Cabinet Member for Adult Services, said: “Working closely with hospital social work staff in the Integrated Discharge Team and providing access to properties designed to support reablement and rehabilitation has had a hugely positive effect in reducing the amount of time some people have to stay in hospital”

The awards ceremony takes place on Friday 27 November at the Vale Resort.
