White Ribbon Day ties the Vale together
25 November 2015
Public service providers from across the Vale have come together to show their support for White Ribbon Day and the battle against domestic violence.
Wednesday 25 November marks the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, inviting governments, international organizations and NGOs to organize activities designed to raise public awareness of the issue. White Ribbon Day 2015 is held on the same day and marks the start of the Vale’s campaign to reduce violence against women, which runs until the 10 December.
The campaign was launched by the Leader of the Vale of Glamorgan Council, Vale of Glamorgan Managing Director, Head of Housing and Visible Services, South Wales Fire and Rescue, Safer Vale Team, South Wales Police, the Cabinet Member for Community Safety, Vale of Glamorgan Operational Housing Manger and the Atal Y Fro team- the main provider of domestic abuse services in the Vale. The Vale of Glamorgan Council is White Ribbon Accredited and works in partnership across the Vale to ensure the campaign is visible and partners work together to raise awareness of domestic abuse and sexual violence.
Speaking at the event Cllr Bronwen Brooks said: “The white ribbon campaign is part of a worldwide movement that is raising awareness of domestic violence and seeks people to pledge never to condone it, or to stand by when we know it is happening. The campaign recognises that domestic abuse is predominantly committed by men and one of its principle aims is to empower men to stand up against those who commit violence towards women and girls.
“We were very proud to have been awarded white ribbon status in last year along with our partners South Wales Police and South Wales Fire and Rescue. The range of organisations represented here today shows clearly that the Vale’s key public service providers are taking a strong stand against domestic violence.”
As a further demonstration of the Vale’s commitment to the campaign, the fire service will all be flying the White Ribbon flag at their offices during the week. The Civic and police station are displaying large white ribbon window stickers to show their support.
