Nell's Point car park reopened

15 October 2015

The group of travellers who had occupied the Nell’s Point car park at Barry Island have been forced to leave the site by the Vale of Glamorgan Council and the facility has been reopened to the public.

The Council served the travellers with a possession order compelling them to vacate the site late on Wednesday 14 October after being granted a possession order by a judge at Cardiff Civil Justice Centre earlier that day.

The car park was cleared and cleaned early on Thursday 14 October and it has now been reopened to the public less than one week after the travellers’ arrival.

Cllr Neil Moore, Leader of the Vale of Glamorgan Council, said: “Since the travellers first occupied the site, the Council has been working tirelessly to remove them. There is a strict legal process that we have to follow when dealing with unauthorised encampments but thanks to the hard work of Council officers we navigated this process as quickly as is possible.”

To accelerate the removal of the travellers the Council had undertaken the necessary welfare assessment over the weekend. The authority’s legal team then successfully applied to the court to have the issue heard as a matter of urgency, shortening the process by a further two days.
