29 October 2015

The Penarth Learning Community which is made up of two new schools in Penarth - St Cyres and Ysgol y Deri has been held up as an exemplar of an excellent community project.

In a recent ceremony in London, the Penarth Learning Community was commended in the Constructing Excellence national awards.

This latest accolade follows close on the heels of recent awards for Best Educational Building, Most Accessible Building and Project of the Year.  In June the project was also recognised as the Best Inclusive Building at the LABC Cymru All Wales Building Excellence Awards.

The facility is part of the Vale of Glamorgan Council’s 21st Century Investment Programme supported by funding from the Welsh Government.

The new builds boast excellent sport and art facilities and specialist areas including a sensory pool, sensory rooms and other therapies along with provision for modern teaching practices.

Commenting, Councillor Chris Elmore, Cabinet Member for Children’s Services and Schools said, “Having visited and witnessed at first hand the facilities at the Penarth Learning Community, I wasn’t entirely surprised to hear of this latest award.  We are very lucky to have such an excellent facility in Penarth.  The environment at both St Cyres and Ysgol y Deri provides the best possible learning conditions to allow the young students to fulfil their potential and hopefully look back at their experience in school as a positive one.”
