Vale of Glamorgan Social Worker recognised at award ceremony
7 October 2015
Denise Rawlings a Social Worker at the Vale of Glamorgan Council has been recognised for her work and dedication in the field of Social Services over the past 12 years.
She picked up the award a prestigious event hosted by the Minister for Health and Social Services, Mark Drakeford AM at the Pierhead Building in Cardiff Bay on Tuesday 6 October.
Denise has worked as a qualified social worker in the Vale of Glamorgan Council’s Adult Services Team for over 12 years, dealing with people with complex needs both emotional and physical.
The Vale Social Worker was nominated by her colleagues for her outstanding support for those in her care and her ability to gain their trust through her communications skills and sound judgement.
Speaking shortly after receiving her award in the category, ‘Spirit of Social Work’, Denise Rawlings said, “It was a bit of a shock when I heard the news that I’d been nominated for this award and took a while for it to sink in but it’s lovely to be recognised in this way by my colleagues. I won’t pretend that that the job of a Social Worker is an easy one but the rewards far outweigh the challenges that we face. Building a relationship and gaining the trust of someone who needs support takes time but to see that person grow in confidence and to move forward to live independently really is an amazing feeling.”
Commenting, Councillor Stuart Egan, Cabinet Member responsible for Social Services said, “People who work in social services, like those who work in the care sector, do so because helping and supporting others is an intrinsic part of their nature. The role of a Social Worker however is an extremely challenging one and comes with a great deal of responsibility. Their work and decisions can change people’s lives for the good but those long and often profound journeys are rarely reported.”
He added, “People like Denise Rawlings are very much unsung heroes and I’m delighted that she has been recognised at the Social Worker of Year Awards. Her achievement is testament to the high regard in which she is held by her colleagues and no doubt the many, many people she has helped over the years. Congratulation to a very deserving winner!”
