Fraudulent telephone calls

14 September 2015

The Council’s trading standards team are warning Vale residents of a telephone scam after more than 60 incidences were reported in one day.

Residents have been reporting receiving telephone calls where the caller claims to be from the Vale of Glamorgan Council, Barry Town Council, or the NHS. The callers then claim that they are contacting residents in relation to an accident that they have had and say they need to get further information from the homeowner.

After the phoney callers have provided false accreditation details and telephone numbers for return calls they then go on to ask for residents' bank account details.

Trading standards would like to remind residents that neither the Vale of Glamorgan Council, Barry Town Council, nor any branch of the NHS would make this type of telephone call. And also that regardless of the supposed caller, residents should never give out personal information in an unsolicited telephone call.

If you believe you’ve received a similar telephone call, you can report it to Citizens Advice by calling 08454 04 05 06 or Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040.   If you have given out any bank details, please contact your bank immediately to report it.
