Next phase begins at Llantwit Learning Community

14 September 2015

The next phase of building work on the site of the new multi-million pound Llantwit Learning Community began on 14 September 2015.

The new Llantwit Learning Community campus, which is part of the Council’s £33.9m 21st Century Schools Investment Programme, will consist of three schools, Ysgol Dewi Sant, Ysgol Y Ddraig, and Llantwit Major Comprehensive School.

The campus will be delivered over three phases, with Ysgol Dewi Sant, a new 210 place Welsh medium primary school, which opened its doors this week, the first to be completed.

Work has now begun on Ysgol Y Ddraig, a 420 place English medium primary school created through the amalgamation of Eagleswell and Llanilltud Fawr primary schools, which will be ready to welcome pupils from September 2016.

As part of the project Llantwit Major Comprehensive School will see major investment into its buildings and facilities to ensure that the school meets 21st Century educational standards. This work is due to be completed by 2017.

Cllr Chris Elmore, Cabinet Member for Children’s Services and Schools, said: “It is wonderful to see work progressing so well on the Llantwit Learning Community.

“The Vale of Glamorgan Council is committed to delivering sector leading educational facilities, not just for our children and young people but for the community of Llantwit Major as a whole. The Llantwit Learning Community will ensure we keep our pledge to the town of Llantwit Major after years of false starts.

“I look forward to watching the development take shape in the coming months and to Ysgol Y Ddraig opening in 2016 with the Comprehensive opening in 2017.”
