Couple using a laptopTrading Standards warn residents of Council tax scam

Vale of Glamorgan Trading Standards Officers are warning residents of an email scam offering people a refund on their Council tax bills.

The email claims to be able to do this because of the level of household income within the last financial year, and then asks users to click on a link to confirm their identity to enable the refund to be made.

Residents should be aware that if the Council did email them regarding Council tax, any correspondence would include their name, address, and account number. They do not send out mail drop type ‘generic’ emails.

A Vale of Glamorgan Council spokesperson commented: “Vale residents are urged to refrain from responding to vague e mails where they are asked to confirm identity details. If you are in any doubt or you require information relating to your Council tax account, you are advised to contact the Vale of Glamorgan Council Tax Section on 01446 700111.”

If you believe you’ve received a similar email, you can report it to Citizens Advice by calling 08454 04 05 06. This information is immediately sent to the Council’s Trading Standards Service.
