Local tennis league serves up a great chance to play

15 August 2016

Vale residents have a great opportunity to play friendly, competitive tennis matches in the new Barry & Vale Tennis League, whether they are member of a tennis club or not.

Open to men and women aged 18 and above, the league is for players of all standards. Players are organised into groups of six to eight people of a similar level and can arrange their own matches at a mutually convenient time over an eight week round.  Entry costs £15 per round and each player has between five and seven matches to play per round.  Players may use any public court that suits them both. With no annual membership to worry about, it’s an affordable way to play friendly, competitive tennis.

After the match, players submit results via their phone or online and can see all the other results and match commentaries in their groups.  There are prizes for the winners of each group and players who complete three matches by the midway point of a round get a free can of tennis balls.  If you are not a member of a tennis club, it can be surprisingly hard to compete at an informal local level or even to find other people to play.

The new league is thanks to a partnership between the Vale of Glamorgan Council’s Sports & Play Development Team and Parks Department, Tennis Wales and Local Tennis Leagues, who lead on the organisation of the leagues.  Local tennis clubs have also had the opportunity to promote the league.

Sally Kinnes, co-founder of Local Tennis Leagues, said, "We are delighted to be running a new league in Barry & the Vale.  Tennis is one of the healthiest sports you can play and the league is a great opportunity to keep fit and make new tennis friends.  Our players enjoy the flexibility of playing matches when it suits but also having a close match when they do play.”

Round one of the Barry & the Vale Tennis League runs from Thursday 22 September to Wednesday 16 November.  You can enter the league online, by visiting www.localtennisleagues.com/barry.  All entries must be received by Monday 19 September.  For more information, email info+barry@localtennisleagues.com.

There are a number of public tennis courts available for the public to use free of charge, so if you are inspired by Andy’s achievements why not dust off your old tennis racket and give it a go again.
