Sports and play family fun day
16 August 2016
More than 500 people enjoyed a range of sports and play activities at the Vale of Glamorgan Council’s Sports & Play Family Fun Day which was held on Kings Square and in Central Park.
During the free event, children, young people and families were able to try out the various sports and activities on offer including athletics, table tennis, basketball, volleyball, golf, football skills and tennis. They were also able try badminton with coaches from Badminton Wales and try out the squash wall, supervised by a Squash Wales coach. There were also a variety of play activities which were supervised by the Vale Council’s play workers which included badge making, clay modelling, giant outdoor games, small worlds play and a home-made ‘photo booth’ for people were able to take their own selfies.
The start of the Olympic and Paralympic Games provided an added motivation for the children to participate in both the sports and play activities. They were awarded a sticker for each activity they participated in and when they had collected five, they were able to claim a medal and certificate to celebrate their participation. The children were delighted and very proud to receive their medals of achievement.
All participants also received a Sports Club Directory compiled by the Sports & Play Development Team, to highlight the range of sports opportunities available across the Vale. With the Olympic Games currently taking place and the Paralympic Games due to start shortly, it is hoped that more people from the Vale will be inspired to join a local club, offering opportunities in more than 30 Olympic & Paralympic sports events including boccia, archery, swimming, badminton, boxing, gymnastics (rhythmic and artistic), hockey, judo, rugby and table tennis.
