Fake Council Tax phone calls received by Vale of Glamorgan residents

Shared Regulatory Services is warning residents of Bridgend, Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan to beware of scam phone calls offering a rebate on overpaid Council Tax.


A lady from Boverton called to report a telephone call from “Tracey” at the “Claim Review Bureau” with an offer to undertake a review of her Council Tax and reduce her bill, in accordance with the number of bedrooms she had. The caller requested a fee of £69 to undertake the work, but the resident refused to pay. “Tracey” had provided a telephone number of 0843 289 1039 and when this number was searched online, it would appear that others have received similar calls.


Another resident was also told she was entitled to a Council Tax refund. The caller requested her bank details to allow the credit to be paid via BACS, but thankfully, the resident refused to provide these details.


On November 29th, Shared Regulatory Services’ Safeguarding Team was at Aldi in Pontprennau, alongside South Wales Police’s Community Safety team and the local Neighbourhood Police Team, to promote crime-prevention over the Christmas period and to provide reassurance to residents.


Each year, scams cause between £5bn and £10bn worth of detriment to UK consumers. In addition to the financial impact, scams can have a severe emotional and psychological impact on victims.


Councillor Gwyn John, chair of the joint committee for Shared Regulatory Services, said: “We have recently joined the Friends Against Scams campaign and promoted National Safeguarding week in mid-November, which demonstrates our absolute commitment to protecting our residents from fraudulent calls like these. 


“We are particularly thankful to those residents that have called to report these scams, as they allow us to help others. It is very important for us to reemphasise the message that you should terminate a phone call you receive out of the blue, especially if the caller requests your bank account number or card details for goods or services. Don’t be afraid to hang up the phone – it’s your right to do so.”
