National Nest Box Week
26 February 2016
Children in the Vale of Glamorgan have taken part in National Nest Box Week (NNBW) to give some much needed help to birdlife in the region.
NNBW is an annual event, organised by the British Trust for Ornithology to promote the conservation of our breeding birds and encourage people to install nest boxes.
Countryside Service Rangers from the Vale of Glamorgan Council ran nest box building sessions at Cosmeston Lakes to celebrate the week. Over 60 eager children took part, demonstrating their DIY skills to build their own nest boxes, which they took home to put up.
Vale Owls were also on hand to provide some suitably feathered friends for the day and talk about their work to rescue and care for owls.
Councillor Lis Burnett, Cabinet Member for Regeneration said: “The Vale of Glamorgan Council is happy to support any national initiatives that protect our wildlife and educate our children to do the same.
“It is wonderful to see children taking part in National Nest Box Week and learning about wildlife. It allows them to play an active role in protecting birds and their habitat.”
