Official opening of Ysgol Gwaun Y Nant
29 February 2016
Ysgol Gwaun Y Nant recently held its official opening to celebrate the new building and the benefits it will offer to the education of the children that attend.
The redevelopment of Ysgol Gwaun Y Nant is part of the Vale of Glamorgan Council’s School Investment Programme, a programme of building and remodelling work that will deliver state of the art teaching across the Vale of Glamorgan.
Ysgol Gwaun Y Nant had previously shared premises with Oak Field Primary School, who relocated into their own purpose built premises in the grounds of the original site in September 2015. The existing building then underwent substantial refurbishment and remodelling to provide the new school premises for Ysgol Gwaun Y Nant.
The newly developed Welsh medium school now has the capacity to accommodate 420 pupils and is able to meet the increasing demand for Welsh medium education in Barry.
The work was undertaken by the Council’s construction partner, ISG, and the design incorporates many features that will enhance the learning experience of the students. The major refurbishments include flexible IT resources in all classrooms, offering state of the art learning for all children. Classrooms are now positioned around a central learning area, providing a natural focal point for the school and an area to gather all children together.
A new dual-use sports and dining hall has maximised space in the school and the modern kitchen ensures that children can enjoy a wide variety of freshly cooked meals.
Headteacher at Ysgol Gwaun Y Nant, Rhydian Lloyd, said: “It has been fantastic to open the doors of our new school to the children and witness the enthusiasm with which they are taking to the new environment.
“The new building offers many practical improvements that have enhanced the learning experience. It helps us as teachers, to make sure that the children get as much from their schooling as possible and are fully engaged.”
Cllr Chris Elmore, Cabinet Member for Children’s Services and Schools, said: “The Vale of Glamorgan Council’s school investment programme continues to reshape the way in which we provide education for our children in primary and secondary schools. The redevelopment of Ysgol Gwaun Y Nant is another example of this.
“The increased number of places at the school shows that we are committed to meeting the demands for Welsh medium education and the state of the art features in the school, will provide a wonderful experience for the students, allowing them to learn in new and interesting ways.
