Charity Sun Cream Van visits Barry this Summer!

18 July 2016

The Tenovus Cancer Sun Cream Van will be hitting the beach this summer and paying the residents of Barry Island a visit.

Wales’ leading cancer charity launched its ‘Here Comes the Sun’ campaign at the start of July, which aims to highlight the importance of staying sun safe this summer, whether you’re at home or abroad.

Sun safety advisors will be on hand to provide sun advice and free sachets of sun cream to visitors who drop in to see them.

Maura Matthews, Health and Wellbeing Manager at Tenovus Cancer Care, is encouraging visitors to make sure they’re well protected from the sun this season. “With the mini heat wave approaching, Tenovus Cancer Care will be at Barry Island giving out free sun cream and having conversations with the public about how to protect themselves in the sun. Skin cancer rates have quadrupled in the last 40 years and have increased more than any other type of cancer. Even though people know they should use sun cream they often leave it too late and get sunburnt. Applying plenty of sun cream, staying out of the sun between 11am-3pm and sitting in the shade, are just some ways of staying safe.”

Cllr Gwyn John, Vale of Glamorgan Council’s Cabinet Member for Visible, Leisure and Regulatory Services, was pleased to have the charity down at Barry Island this summer: “I think it’s brilliant that Tenovus will be using one of Wales’ leading seaside resorts as a base for the summer. It is so important for people to take the necessary precautions when spending a day in the sunshine. I hope plenty of people come to enjoy the resort and the weather, and stay safe in the sun.”
