Vale of Glamorgan Council acts quickly to remove travellers

29 July 2016

The Vale of Glamorgan Council has taken swift action following the unauthorised occupation of a site near Stalling Down, Cowbridge.

The travellers were informed immediately that their occupation of the site was both unauthorised and inappropriate. Stalling Down is popular spot for walkers and used by locals and visitors all year around, this is why the Council is working to resolve the situation as soon as possible. However, there is a strict legal process that must be followed in the event of the occupation of land by Gypsy and Traveller groups.

Before any action can be taken the Council is required to undertake a welfare assessment. This assessment was carried out today by a Council officer. Now that the assessment has been completed it is our intention to issue the group with a deadline by which to leave the site.  If this deadline is not met then the Council will commence legal action.

All preparations required to take the matter to court will be made ahead of the deadline so that any enforcement action can be progressed promptly if required.

No complaints have been received about the group’s conduct. However, it remains the Vale of Glamorgan Council’s view that this is an unauthorised encampment that is causing disruption to the local community and one that is in no way appropriate.
