Glamorgan Heritage Coast receives funding boost
14 March 2016
Visitors to Dunraven Bay, Southerndown, can now access the beach more easily thanks to a newly refurbished slipway.
Over time, the slipway had been eroded by the sea and became desperately in need of repair. Using funding awarded to the Vale of Glamorgan Council last year by the Coastal Communities Fund, it has now been rebuilt and once again allows all visitors to access the beach.
The improvements also mean beach wheelchairs will soon be available for hire at the site, free of charge.
The slipway work is one of a series of projects being undertaken along the Heritage Coast thanks to the funding, which was awarded to help boost the economic potential of the area. In addition, five new storage units, created to encourage local businesses and beach activity providers to use the coast as a base, will soon be available to hire and are situated adjacent to the Heritage Coast Centre.
Due to the funding boost a new member of staff has been employed by the Vale of Glamorgan Council to offer business support to both existing and new Glamorgan Heritage Coast businesses.
Cllr Lis Burnett, Cabinet Member for Regeneration, said: "It is wonderful to see the Coastal Communities Funding being put to good use already. Not only has it allowed us to transform the slipway and make this beautiful part of the coastline more accessible, we’ve also been able to install these new storage units which will offer a unique coastal base for businesses in the area.
"The investment in the area will benefit both residents and tourists alike, with the economic development from the project helping support the cost of providing local services. I’m excited to see people making use of the new infrastructure."
As part of the developments, the Heritage Coast Centre is also undergoing some improvements thanks to the Council, creating a more welcoming visitor experience as well as a more functional space.
