Leadership Café leads the way for the Vale of Glamorgan Council

The Vale of Glamorgan Council’s Leadership Café has been shortlisted in the Team of the Year category for the prestigious LGC Awards 2017.

 

The Council’s Leadership Café was designed as a leadership development programme without the attendant costs, selection requirements or wider trappings of such a programme.

 

The Leadership Café has been open since May 2015, runs every third week of the month and is open to all employees across the Council. Its philosophy is to provide an informal ‘café-like’ atmosphere at which any aspiring leaders within the Council can meet to discuss leadership issues and share examples of good practice.


It was conceived, set up and is now managed by a small, but incredibly committed group of staff from all service areas. Although the Café is run on a voluntary and ‘low industry’ basis, it has gone from strength to strength, with pre-booking now essential. Some of the recent sessions have included the 7 habits of effective leadership, the power of positive thinking, emotional intelligence and the theory of marginal gains.


The award ceremony will take place in London on 08 March 2017, with finalists being judged on their performance over the last year.


Reuben Bergman, Head of Human Resources for the Vale of Glamorgan Council, said: “I am thrilled that the team continues to receive national recognition for their work and the success of the Leadership Café. The Cafe reflects the commitment, enterprise and creativity of our staff and has become an important part of our approach to succession planning. This can only be good for the Council in the long term.” 


The LGC Awards provides local authorities with the opportunity to showcase specific achievements. The awards help spread best practice across the UK, with all competitors able to learn from one another in order to move forward, improve and innovate.
