Vale of Glamorgan Council’s Sports Academy Scheme set to commence

November 30 2016

THE Sports Academy Scheme, delivered by the Vale of Glamorgan Council and Legacy Leisure, is offering 10 local sports stars free use of Council-owned leisure facilities in a bid to boost their chances of success.

Applications are invited from Vale residents who have represented Great Britain or Wales in the past year in a sport recognised by Sport Wales.

Those successful will have free access to Council-owned leisure facilities that are appropriate to their training needs, subject to availability and in compliance with the conditions of use.

If places are not filled by existing Welsh internationals, applications from Welsh squad members will be considered as long as the National Governing Body can provide significant support for the individual.

Athletes within the following groups will NOT be eligible to apply to the Academy:
- Individuals who represent Wales/Britain in Masters competition.

- Individuals who represent National Governing Bodies of Sport that are not recognised by Sport Wales.

- Professional sportspeople who receive payment for their performances.

- Individuals chosen to represent Welsh schools in a sport where this does not constitute full international honours.

Due to financial restrictions, not all of the Vale’s talented sportspeople who qualify can become members of the Academy.

There are a maximum of 10 spots available so meeting the eligibility criteria does not guarantee acceptance onto the scheme.
In instances where there are more than 10 eligible applications, membership will be awarded on merit and the information provided in the application form.

Sports Academy membership is decided on a yearly basis. The 2017 scheme will begin in January. Those interested in applying should contact Karen Davies in the Council’s Sports and Play Development Team on 01446 704793 or be emailing
