Extraordinary meeting of Vale committee to discuss proposed schools investment
21 September 2016
An extraordinary meeting of the Vale of Glamorgan Council’s Learning and Culture Scrutiny Committee will be held on 3 October 2016 at 6:00pm at the Civic Offices, the main purpose of which will be to discuss the proposals to establish two new mixed secondary schools in Barry that are currently the subject of a public consultation.
The plans currently under consideration would see £44m invested into two new mixed schools for Barry. These would replace the existing Barry Comprehensive and Bryn Hafren Comprehensive schools.
£11.5m has been earmarked for investment into buildings currently occupied by Bryn Hafren Comprehensive School and £32.5m for a new school building and a centre of behavioural excellence on the Barry Comprehensive School site. Both new schools would have a capacity of 1100 places.
To offer another route through which members of the public can share their views on the proposals special arrangements have been made for extended public speaking at the extraordinary meeting of the committee responsible for scrutinising education issues in the Vale. This will allow parents and other local residents to share their views with the committee’s members.
Any member of the public not employed by or a governor of either school, or related to an employee or governor, is able to make representations to the committee. Written representations can also be submitted.
Following the meeting the committee can make recommendations to cabinet for their consideration and these will be considered alongside responses to the public consultation. Trade union representatives and the chairs of the board of governors at the comprehensive schools and all associated feeder schools have also been invited to attend the meeting.
Anyone wishing to speak at the meeting must contact Karen Bowen in the Council’s democratic services team before 12:00 on Friday 30 September. This can be done by email to email@example.com or by calling 01446 709856.
The proposals for the future of English medium education in Barry can be viewed on the Council’s website. The agenda for the meeting will be available online from Tuesday 27 September.
